ROT13 Decoder

ROT13 text transformation

ROT13 Decoder

Our ROT13 Decoder is a simple online tool that takes ROT13-encoded text as input and transforms it into the original form.  Enter or copy the text you wish to decode into the “Content” field and click “Convert.”

What is ROT13?

ROT13, short for "rotate by 13 places," is a simple letter substitution cipher that works by shifting each letter in the alphabet by 13 positions. It's a variant of the Caesar cipher and serves as a simple form of encryption, often used for casual purposes like text obfuscation.

How to encode text using ROT13?

To encode text with ROT13, replace each letter with the letter 13 places further in the alphabet. The alphabet wraps around, so the letters at the end of the alphabet are replaced with the letters from the beginning.  For example, 'A' becomes 'N', 'B' becomes 'O', and so on, and ‘N’ becomes ‘A’,’ O’ becomes ‘B’, ‘P’ becomes ‘C’, and so on.

For example:

  • Original: Why was six afraid of seven? Because seven eight nine.
  • Encoded: Jul jnf fvk nsenvq bs frira? Orpnhfr frira rvtug avar.

How to decode text encoded with ROT13?

ROT13 is a symmetric algorithm, therefore, decoding ROT13-encoded text is done using the same process as encoding - each letter is replaced with the letter 13 places apart.

For example:

  • Encoded: Orsber lbh zneel n crefba, lbh fubhyq svefg znxr gurz hfr n pbzchgre jvgu n fybj Vagrearg pbaarpgvba gb frr jub gurl ernyyl ner.
  • Original:  Before you marry a person, you should first make them use a computer with a slow Internet connection to see who they really are.

Is ROT13 a symmetric or asymmetric cipher?

ROT13 is a symmetric cipher, meaning that the same algorithm (a rotation by 13 places) is used for both encrypting and decrypting the text.

 For example:

  • Original: What do you call a doctor who fixes websites? A URL-ologist.
  • Encoded: Jung qb lbh pnyy n qbpgbe jub svkrf jrofvgrf? N HEY-bybtvfg.
  • Decoded: What do you call a doctor who fixes websites? A URL-ologist.

Can ROT13 be used for serious encryption?

No, ROT13 is not suitable for serious encryption. Its primary utility lies in its simplicity and reversibility, making it more of a tool for basic obfuscation rather than robust data protection. ROT13 is often used in online forums to protect email addresses, hide spoilers or potentially offensive content, etc.
