QR Code Overview

QR codes, or Quick Response codes, are two-dimensional barcodes. They were initially created in 1994 by a Japanese company called Denso Wave. QR codes have gained popularity due to their ability to store a variety of data types, including alphanumeric characters, binary, and Kanji characters. The encoded information can represent a URL, text, contact information (vCard), email details, SMS messages, and more.

QR codes are square images, with an equal number of rows and columns. There are a fixed set of QR code sizes: from 21 to 177 rows/columns, increasing in steps of four. Each configuration is referred to as a "version." In total, there are 40 QR code versions, identified as Version 1 through Version 40. The size (in rows and columns) or version of a QR code directly influences its data storage capacity; more rows/columns allow for the encoding of more data.

QR  codes can be read by using optical devices equipped with the appropriate software. The range of QR code readers spans from specialized scanners designed solely for QR codes to the smartphones that have this functionality integrated into their cameras. It's important to note that while dedicated QR code scanners can read the full range of QR code versions, some mobile devices may have limitations, with the ability to only read up to Version 4, for instance.

QR codes streamline processes like data sharing, website access, and contact exchange, making them a versatile tool in both personal and business contexts.
