Word Count

Our Word Count tool is designed to quickly provide you with the count of individual letters and words in a given block of text.  Counting words and letters is a standard practice in schools and colleges, often used  for assignments, essays, and other written tasks.

The tool displays three separate numbers, calculated as follow: 

  • Words: This represents the total number of words. In this context, a "word" is a sequence of characters separated by spaces, punctuation (Unicode “Punctuation” and “Separator” categories), or the beginning/end of a line. 
  • Letters & Numbers: This count encompasses characters from the Unicode "Letter" and "Number" categories. Punctuation and separators are excluded from this count.
  • Characters: This figure provides the overall count of all characters, including separators and end-of-line (EOL) characters.
